What Is llms.txt?
llms.txt for business websites is a simple idea: one plain-text file, placed at the root of your site, that gives AI systems a clean, curated summary of who you are, what you do, and which pages matter. When ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google's AI Mode goes looking for a business like yours, this file hands them the answer instead of making them reconstruct it from your navigation menu and 40 scattered pages.
The standard was proposed in late 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI, and adoption started where you'd expect — developer documentation sites. But the logic applies directly to any business that wants to be found: AI systems work with limited context. They can't read your whole site every time someone asks "who's the best HVAC company near me that answers after hours?" A concise, structured summary beats 40 pages of nav menus and sliders every time.
Where It Lives and What It Looks Like
The file sits at yourdomain.com/llms.txt — same neighborhood as robots.txt and sitemap.xml. Unlike those two, it's written in Markdown, which means it's readable by humans and machines alike. No code, no plugins, no developer required. If you can write a one-page summary of your business, you can write an llms.txt file.
Why llms.txt Matters for Business Websites
Here's the shift that makes this file worth 30 minutes of your time: a growing share of buying research now happens inside AI assistants instead of on a results page. When a prospect asks an AI for a recommendation, the AI composes a short answer naming two or three businesses. There is no page two. You're either in the answer or you're invisible.
The Shift From Rankings to Answers
Traditional SEO is a ranking game — be one of ten blue links. AI search is a selection game — be one of the two or three businesses the model actually names. Selection favors businesses whose information is easy to extract, verify, and summarize. That's exactly the problem llms.txt solves: it converts your site from "a pile of HTML the model has to interpret" into "a summary the model can quote."
AI search doesn't reward the loudest website. It rewards the clearest one. llms.txt is you handing the machine a clean summary instead of making it guess.
Is llms.txt officially supported by every AI crawler? No — and anyone who tells you it's a guaranteed ranking lever is selling something. Support varies by platform and is still evolving. But the cost is near zero, the downside is zero, and the file doubles as a forcing function: if you can't write a clear one-page summary of your business, that clarity problem is hurting you everywhere, not just in AI search.
What Goes in the File
The format is deliberately simple. An llms.txt file contains, in order: an H1 with your business name, a short blockquote summary of what you do and who you serve, optional context paragraphs, and then sections of links to your most important pages — each with a one-line description of what's on that page.
A Worked Example for a Local Service Business
# Lakeside Family Dental
> Family and cosmetic dentistry in Plano, TX. Same-week appointments, in-house membership plan for uninsured patients, open Saturdays.
## Services
- [Implants](url): Single-tooth and full-arch implants, pricing from $3,200
- [Invisalign](url): Free consultation, 12–18 month average treatment
## Practice Info
- [New Patients](url): Insurance accepted, forms, first-visit walkthrough
- [Contact](url): Two locations, hours, after-hours phone line
Notice what that example does: it front-loads the facts an AI needs to recommend the practice — location, differentiators, pricing signals, availability. Those are the details that decide whether a model names you in an answer. Vague marketing copy ("we deliver exceptional smiles") gives the model nothing to work with. Specifics win. This is the same rule we apply to every page in our website design and AISEO work: a machine can only repeat what you actually said.
How to Write and Publish Yours in Under 30 Minutes
This is one of the few pieces of technical SEO a business owner can legitimately do alone before lunch. Here's the process we use:
The 5-Step Version
- 1. Write the summary (10 min): One H1 with your business name, then a two-sentence blockquote: what you do, who you serve, where, and your one biggest differentiator. If a stranger read only these two sentences, they should be able to describe your business accurately.
- 2. Pick your 8–12 most important pages (5 min): Services, pricing, locations, about, contact. Skip the blog archive and the privacy policy. This is a highlight reel, not a sitemap.
- 3. Add a one-line description per link (10 min): Each line should contain a fact — a price range, a turnaround time, a service area — not a slogan.
- 4. Save it as llms.txt and upload it to your site root (2 min): Any hosting panel or CMS file manager can do this. Verify it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser.
- 5. Keep it honest (ongoing): Update it when prices, services, or locations change. A stale file that contradicts your site is worse than no file.
What llms.txt Won't Do
Operator-to-operator honesty: this file is a supplement, not a strategy. It won't fix a site that loads in six seconds, has no schema markup, and buries its pricing. It won't override what AI models learn about you from reviews, directories, and third-party mentions. And because crawler support is uneven, you should treat it as one signal among several — cheap insurance, not a silver bullet.
Where It Fits in a Broader AISEO Plan
In our AISEO framework, llms.txt is one of six visibility layers, alongside schema markup, crawlable HTML, answer-shaped content, entity consistency, and third-party citations. We covered the full picture in our guide to AISEO, and the diagnostic version in why your website isn't showing up in AI search results. If those layers are a house, llms.txt is the sign out front — useful, fast to install, and pointless if the house behind it is falling down.
The 30-Minute Payoff
Most fixes in AI visibility take weeks. This one takes half an hour, costs nothing, and puts you ahead of the majority of businesses in your market who haven't heard of it yet. Write the file this week. Then, if you want to know how visible your business actually is when prospects ask AI for recommendations — and what the other five layers would take to fix — book a free strategy call. We'll run the assessment and show you exactly where you stand.
